Meeting Notes, Nov 14, 2019

today's topic: If money were no object, what art related thing would be on your shopping list and why?

Celeste: I will have a Leer Jet and an expert pilot to take me anywhere in the world for painting. I'll also need a dependable cat-sitter. (Laughter)! Ok, for a more "possible" answer, I would like Old Holland paint for all of the colors that I usually use on my palette. I own some Old Holland tubes, but not many. I think it would be cool to paint with super high end paint, just to experience it. I am showing practice paintings from my back yard and an archived figure painting from a life session.

Eunice:  I would love to have a dedicated secure storage building for all my paintings. They take up a lot of room.

Geri: I would like an enclave of cottages in the countryside that would be for all of us. It would have all the amenities. We would name is for my husband's favorite drink: "Makers Mark" (Laughter)! All our needs would be met for all to be creative. There would be a live-in Doctor, someone to do our taxes, a cook, a purchasing agent, classes in yoga and a swimming pool. There would be a main Lodge, an art library and a framing shop. (Laughter)! We would have a painting bus for paint out trips. We would all have emergency medallions around our necks in case we need help, in case we drop a tube of burnt umber and can't get it! (Laughter)! (Applause) (Photo of full notes on front page).

I am also sharing a book I have that I love. It it prints of special art, all black and white.

Ken: I really do have everything I need already, but if pressed I guess I'd agree that my own studio would be nice. I would have the first floor be a studio and gallery and people who pass by could step in and visit with me. I would live above in the 2nd floor. I am showing a new studio painting.

Mike P: I would like some extravagant brushes that I'd never normally purchase. Maybe go for a number 7 Windsor Newton Watercolor brush...but as we all know, it is not the brush that makes a great painting. (Kay Elmore interjects: "Oh, yes it is") Laughter!

I went to Dick Blick recently and all the gouache and watercolor tubes are under lock and key. Turns out they currently have a terrible problem with shoplifting. After I learned this I saw a batch of new watercolors for sale on Facebook on one of the swap pages.....(AHA)! Laughter! I'll pass around my sketchbook. You are never bored if you have a sketchbook!

Tim: I'm not feeling all that extravagant...I'd just get this. It folds down into like a briefcase and unfolds into a table and chair. I'd use it for watercolor. I painted this on "Duralar" it was an experiment and I also liked how the painting looks on the other side. My brother died in 2009. I realized that I still had his ashes, after all these years. I decided to paint this landscape studio oil painting with his ashes in the paint. (Applause)!

Tom D: I have everything I need...I am happy with everything as it is. I like how Ward went for the life he wanted. He is not rich with money, but he lives precisely how he envisioned (traveling and painting out of a RV). It points out that we all have differing ideas about what is special. I am showing a recent plein air painting.

Tom K: I would want more colors! I am showing a painting I did at the Kat Sowa Paint out.

Tedd: I'd like a little Chateau in France..with a swimming pool! I am showing a recent palette knife painting.

Joanne T: There was a time when I wanted everything I have. I asked the universe for things I wanted and the universe answered with everything. Of course, now I want even more (Laughter)! I would like a place for storage! I visited a place and complained about how I have too many paintings and the proprietor said" Well, why don't I make you the December featured artist"? Well, that takes care of 25 paintings I now don't have to store right there! (Laughter)! I am in love with some special frames, but the cost is crazy. Some gold leaf frames are 1,000 and more. My mentor says, it's okay, you get it back when it sells (but, wow, imagine spending that). I'd like unlimited Ray Mar and Sourcetek panels. I am showing a painting I painted with instruction from online and also a painting I did from one of Tim's (free) photos!

Elo: I'd buy us all lunch! (Laughter)! I'd have a gallery where I would show all my friend's work! (Laughter)!

Mike S: I would like to paint with the Putney Painters in Vermont. I'd study with Richard Schmid for a minimum of three months. I painted this painting of a cat in a chair from a photo reference. I am currently interested in painting animals, particularly horses. I happened upon this very charming book about a horse a fox and a boy at the Broadway bookstore.

Thomas K: Some have already stolen my ideas. I have dreamt about having a huge building where creatives could work independently and together. Actually, I'd really like a man-servant. Someone to do all the things I don't want to do and/or find it hard to find the time to do...someone to grind my paint, handle all my commitments, sort things, basically what Sargent had. (Laughter)! In Texas I painted this at a place called Headwaters Ranch. This looks nothing like the rest of Texas! (Laughter)! It felt familiar, like the Gorge. I got to show the Texans how to paint green! (Laughter)!

Dotty: I'd buy van Gogh's "Sunflowers"! (Laughter)! As it turns out, I actually am looking for a new plein air set up for my pastels..so, that is more attainable.  I am showing a recent pastel.

Bonny: It didn't occur to me to be extravagant. I was just thinking I'd like a bigger scanner! I'd also stay in a lodge instead of camping at Glacier National Park. (Laughter)! This painting is my "quick draw" for the Beaverton quick draw. (My version was three hours and the allotted time was two hours only, so not eligible) Laughter!

Renita: I thought more realistically too. I'd just like some good plein air equipment. Maybe I'd like a business consultant. (Laughter)!

Kay: I'd have a travel van! In particular I'd have a Mercedes Metris. I'd have it custom built! I took the Bill Park monotype workshop. It was so challenging, but also so fun. I am showing my work from the workshop.

Jim: I'd like something that you can't buy, some patience! I'd like to have a studio large enough to accommodate me and others. I'd have a bunch of easels up, all you'd have to bring is your paints and canvas. I'd like proper lighting too. I did these charcoal drawing s at Sauvie Island recently. I took Thomas' Plein Air Drawing class and I've been practicing what I learned. Here also is a recent painting I did of some persimmons.

Jeanie: I would like a studio. I don't have much space now and it would be great to be able to spread out. I'd love to go to Art School in Europe! I am showing a painting I did on a "free" 12x12 panel (given to me by Kay Elmore when she was downsizing).

Lon (new, welcome): I think everyone wants a studio. I have long admired some technology, it's a tablet, you draw on it and it comes up on another monitor. I also wouldn't mind a regular old school light table.

Greg: Travel...I would like to travel!

Judith: World Peace. (Laughter)!
