Meeting Notes October 24, 2019

Today's topic: Describe something that you have not yet done ...that you might benefit from (as it pertains to painting)

Celeste: At first blush I think, I've done it all! (laughter)! I have not taken advantage of the Boldbrush competition so I'll enter in the future and also look at entering an AIS competition. I am perfectly happy not to do these things, but I know that entering can yield benefits. I am showing two paintings from my month-long "Dave" project and a recent painting of Powell Butte.

Stephanie: I don't get around to painting cityscapes. I wonder if that is because my career was in drafting and it's difficult to get a straight edge in paint. I do take city photos and think about it. I like landscape so well, but there might be value in painting the city. I'm making it a goal and plan on using watercolor. I am showing a painting from Yachats and a 2nd one for the 200 show at OSA.

Christina (new) I took a workshop with Robert Burridge. He plans things out in advance and that is why his paintings always seem to work so well. He even decides on a title before he paints the painting! I, on the other hand, am not a planner. (Though it doesn't come naturally to me, I understand the wisdom)! I like the idea of selecting a title from opening a book and "blindly" pointing to the words. His planning method: "Concept, Composition, Color, Continue and Create".

Susan: I know I would benefit from a watercolor class. I am going to be the facilitator at Andy Evanson's watercolor workshop. I held my Open Studio for the last two weekends and I consider it successful. For example, I sold THIS painting ! (Applause)!

Chris: I "should" be going to life drawing on Fridays! I might do it!

Sarah: I have started my first "store". I am hoping to generate some income and experiment more. I work in motion graphics/animation, and I am also committed to traditional art. I did these ink drawings for "Inktober" (an inking challenge). I often feel anxious, so I plan on relaxing more!

Wendy: I have not been at this very long. I imagine I should be learning some portrait skills. I am showing a recent watercolor painting.

Mike: Today is my final day of chemo! (Applause)! Being a member of this group has been very positive for me. I thank you all for your support. I have learned how important it is to accept care and help! A lot of men have trouble with this, but I have learned how important it is. I am showing my "living with cancer" journal. I recorded my own thoughts in it since I was diagnosed. Others have written in it too, nurses and my family. Please add something if you feel so inclined! I brought in a book about sketching people. I know it would benefit me if I increased my skills in this area. I am showing my sketchbook. I also have these red filters* that are for sale ( 5 each, proceeds to OSA). *Red filters make seeing values easier.

Jim: I have painted some less than favorable paintings on really good panels! My plan it to re-use the panels (by painting over the "bad" painting). No sense letting good panels go to waste. I am showing three recent paintings. At this time of year, you just have to paint the fall foliage, right?

Dianna: My mentor was William Reese. He wrote this book. He was a wonderful artist and he wrote: I will try to be a better artist every day". He meant it. He was already an artist of the first rank, but he looked to improve every day. I try to do the same. William Reese was known as the cowboy artist. He presented himself as completely no-nonsense. He would say something like "Well, that isn't shitty" and that was his version of a compliment! (Laughter)! I like getting the questions here, because this question made me remember that I used to have this thumb-box (and all the supplies I needed) in my car all the time. I used to paint the sunrise from my car.I thought, why aren't I still doing that? I haven't done that in 11 years, but why not do it again! I am showing 3 recent paintings.

Greg: I would be better off if I cleaned my studio! I have all sorts of projects going at once.

Mark: I have not taken a workshop. I would undoubtedly benefit. I am showing two recent paintings. These are done on Strathmore Art Again. It is such a surprise how well it takes pastel. It doesn't seem like it has much tooth, but I am continually impressed. I have done some ink drawings for the "Inktober" challenge.

Karen: My husband was a float builder for the Mardi Gras...! My love of gold and glitter may have started there. (Laughter)! I am interested in adding gold to a pastel painting. I am also interested in marbling effects. I am showing a painting from my archives (it's from a time when I worked with Amanda Houston).

Vicki: I am interested in learning more about figure. I am thinking about expressionist portraits. I am showing 3 recent paintings. (Two of these paintings are for entry in the 200 show at OSA)

Donna: I held an Open Studio for two weekends in a row. My studio is so clean and organized, I can't find anything! (Laughter)! I had some prints of this made onto metal and people really like them (and buy them)! (Applause)! I am also showing this pet portrait (in progress).

Paul (new): This is my first time here. Christina and I are both members of the Portland Fine Artists Guild. We invite you to submit work for our Call to Artists. As for the question, I do take my sketchbook out into the world, but I haven't painted outdoors and I know it would benefit me. I'm a studio painter, but I really am open to the idea!

Tedd: I am doing something I'm calling "Marketing Monday". I like to paint and not promote, but I know I can spend one day per week on marketing matters. Many of you know I have been painting bit...but I have also been painting small. Here are two of my small paintings.

Tim: I do love the woods and I don't love the city! I'll work on it. I take a lot of photos and I bet I could find an acceptable city scene to paint. I am showing two recent paintings.

Geri: My husband and I like the open studios. This year we went to 16 studios! One of my favorites was an older woman who had an outdoor ceramic studio from where she sold ceramics and jam! (Laughter)! I draw every week with the Hiatus Drawing club. This is what I drew last week. (I get the reference from the Sktchy app).

Jeanie: I have plans to paint a sandhill crane. I'll continue a bird series.

Elo: I paint for specific events and that fills up my time. It might benefit me to paint subjects that don't have anything to do with the events. I am showing a commission and a painting of a Portland Park.  I always think it is best to put a person and a dog in a Park painting (Laughter)!
