Meeting Notes, August 22, 2019

Today's topic: Organization...(as it pertains to painting) tell us what you know:

Celeste: If you organize absolutely everything it will take away from spontaneity and creativity. I think it is good to be organized in your head, knowing what to do and feeling secure about your objectives. I do keep things where they belong in my studio I brought in this book by Sunny Apinchapong. I brought two old paintings and two new ones.

Loretta: I'm organized in my thoughts, but not in my studio. It's an inductive approach!

Stephanie: "Messy piles is creativity waiting to happen" (Laughter)! You do need some organization. I'll share this trick..I use dish racks to dry my panels. I brought in 3 paintings from Sauvie Island. (In one, I decided to handle the landscape more abstractly).

Kathy J: Something like 1-15 years ago I had a dream about color shifting. I made notes about the dream and...and finally (after all this time) I have done it! I am showing 4 large paintings based on the color shifting dream. (Applause)! You might think this would all be easy, but it fact it was mentally challenging!

Marie: There will never be any danger of me being overly organized! (Laughter)! I learned about Portrait Connection and painted this in anticipation of making donation to them. I was accepted. (Applause)!

Donna: My studio gets messy, then I clean it up and then it gets messy again! Though this is the case, I always do know where everything is. I am showing a painting of the view from Tom McCall vista point in the Gorge.

Kathy P: My planner and calendar are my organizational tools. My studio is an 8x9 space that has become like a closet. We just put things into that room and I don't want to go in there! (Laughter)! I am thinking about taking another room for my studio while I sort out that room!
I am in Za's class. She is currently teaching about negative space (and how to create positive forms from negative shapes). Yesterday we painted roses at Peninsula Park.

Karen: I am trying to organize my time. I work in Pastels. I liked a suggestion I heard in a youTube video. Tape a paper to your board, so that it is ready in the morning! I also find thumbnails to be invaluable (for organizing the painting itself).

Sharman: I am going to be painting plein air in the Black Hills. I am organizing for it! My prior plein air experience could be described as very disorganized, so I learned what not to do! I am just here to get some wisdom from all of you!

Dianna: Recently I moved..so I went to IKEA and got shelves. I also got bins...I have organized everything! I have even organized all my inventory of paintings! (But, don't talk to me about my office or taxes!) (Laughter)! I have to travel a fair amount, so I wanted to show you the kit I have that I take on a plane. It is a large Zip Lock plastic bag with my acrylic gear inside. I use a steerlite plastic box for my palette and this box for my acrylic paints. It is all just 7 pounds. I had a similar kit for oil. I put a list of contents inside the bag (with an explanation that none of it is toxic). I am showing a painting that I "organized" in that I decided ahead of time that I would use yellow, orange, magenta and turquoise.

Bonnie: My background is the Military. I knew I wanted to be an illustrator and I did not have the means to acquire an education --so I joined the Military and became an illustrator! It was the only way. As you can imagine, I am a regimented person, I know how to get things done. I am going to make a trip to Glacier, specifically to paint and draw the lodges. I am showing my sketchbook. I have some items to give away --for anyone who is interested.

Carol: First off..I brought Winston back! (Applause)! My goal is to go plein air painting with just a backpack! In my studio I use a hanging shoe rack that is plastic that you can see through. I put articles in the shoe rack that don't have a permanent "home" (example, little things, like charcoal for drawing). I am going to be doing the Zhoming Wu workshop this weekend. I am showing a painting from Clackamette Park.

Tom K: I'm very organized...I got here today! (Laughter)! The last time I painted with the "Emergency Tree Response Team" I left my glasses behind and painted this. (collective "ooooo")! I really am very organized. I travel a lot and I fill an entire suitcase with supplies.

Becky: I got here late because of the accident. I brought in a painting from my archives. I like the painting, but I painted on an Ampersand board. I was challenged by the surface..it was difficult because it was too smooth.

Sandy: (new! welcome)! This is my first meeting. (Applause)! I recently put together everything for a new website. It required a lot of organization! I am happy with this painting. It was from just a beautiful moment when the sun hit a tree stump just right!

Mike: I organized sitting closer to Bonnie than Jim did, so I could get that watercolor paper that she gave away! (Laughter)! I am showing this painting that I did in a figure session that was hours long..and another painting from a different figure session that was just 45 minutes long. I like the painting from the shorter session best! I am also showing this landscape. (I use an adapted Fredericks stretcher bar frame to transport wet paintings).

Jim: I am tired of organization ! (Laughter). Well, I do have piles of things that I have to sort through sometimes. Recently I took on this self imposed challenge. I set out some cherries and painted them in oil. Then I painted the same set up in Gouache. I did it to evaluate the differences!

Tim: I have zero organizational skills ! (Laughter)! I don't do the same thing twice the same way! Last week I got some garlic at the fruit/vegetable stand outside and I painted this! (Applause)! And last week I painted this plein air (Becky, I used a smooth Ampersand board and I liked it)!

Tom D: Recently I took 42 paintings to the dump ...! (Applause)! Then I organized my space some. The Vancouver waterfront has been improved and revamped. I painted there recently and this is the result.

Ken: In my former career my boss was messy and I was organized. But, it didn't seem to matter one way or the other! I wanted to show you two recent paintings, but they are still at the photographer. Recently I donated a painting to a cause and then I learned I sold a painting! So you see, I give something and I get something back! (Applause)!

Lisa: My husband and I are DIY-ers. We built our own garage. I thought...why don't we just make it "L" shaped so that I can have a studio? We did it! I have cupboards that I hide things in! (Laughter)! I found this painting that I did when I was only 19 years old. I painted it of the "student ghetto" at College (in Champagne/Urbana, Illinois). I still like this painting so well (even though I had no idea whatsoever what I was doing)! I am showing also a recent painting from the coast.

Chris: I like organization. If I don't have things the way I think they should be, I can't concentrate to do the work. I'd be sitting there thinking...I can't start this...until I do that! (Laughter)!

Geri: I have moved a lot ...so I have embraced the proverb: " A thing for everything and everything in it's place"! I am showing a recent painting and a recent plein air painting.

Judith: I have a German background. So, when I was little, instead of playing with dolls, I would just label them and store them! (Laughter)! In fact, I still label things now. (It is helpful to label things)! I am showing a painting from my trip to France.

Eunice: I'm never organized! Thomas Kitts ships things ahead sometimes and/or ships things home after an event. I think that is clever.
