Meeting Notes, March 5, 2020

Topic: Spring plans...what are yours?

Celeste: My plan is to clean up our back yard (so that I can be happy out there painting).  I painted these floral paintings in the back yard last year. This might be my favorite "Spring" painting that I painted in Hood River. I am also showing a current black and white study of me and my neighbor's Mountain Bernese dog.

Joanne: I am going to be Spring Cleaning when I get time. My studio looks like a tornado hit it. I just delivered 44 pieces of art to the Celebration of Creativity..so I have been busy! I am showing two "Springtime" paintings from demonstrations that I've recently painted.

Geri: I'm really motivated to paint! Life is good! I am showing my Father Bob painting...(I finished it)!

Susan: I am a Spring cleaner..I clean a lot. It is my go-to thing that I do. I've been becoming almost a minimalist. If I can't use it I get rid of it. If I can't open a tube of paint, I just get rid of it! I've been Framed will take your used art supplies and give you a credit. I am showing this painting that I did as a demo. It is from a reference from a trip I took to Nepal.

Wendy: No cleaning! I did a "Spring" painting! I painted it last night!

Tim: In honor of Spring I ordered more panels. I have to get into my garage and make room for storage! I am showing a painting I recently did. I wanted to see how little information I could put into it and still make a painting. I did this figure drawing with a copper tip (on a gessoed surface). Then I did the same, (I drew a flower with the copper tip) and then painted over the top with gouache.

Carol: I went to Arizona last week. I didn't know that the trees in Arizona lost their leaves..I assumed they didn't. I painted this painting during the trip. We went to the Spirit of the West Museum and I bought this book about Maynard Dixon. It was nearly 100 dollars, which normally I would think of as expensive, but I love every single page. I've more than gotten my money's worth!

Mike: As you know, I have agreed to be in an upcoming 8x8 show..and because I took that plunge I also agreed to be in the 12x12 show at Sequoia Gallery. The problem is I have never painted in a square format before. I've been practicing, painting square paintings in my sketchbook. That is what I have been doing "for Spring"! I am showing you my cropping mat board that is helping me make decisions how to crop (possibly) some existing watercolor paintings. I saw Susan Kuznitsky's demo at Blick. I decided to "help" her by being a willing participant. She had me try pastel and .....I LIKED it! (Laughter)! I've been thinking about it ever since! (Laughter)!

Sharman: Recently, I went plein air painting, but I became soundly discouraged! I'll try it again in the future, but in the meanwhile I decided to do something else..I painted this abstract in acrylic.

Dotty: I will ditto what everyone has said. Spring is a good time to start thinking about getting outside! I am excited about the prospects. I didn't paint outside during winter. I am showing a recent painting.

Steve: This topic makes me realize that I could and should improve the "front yard" of my studio. It is not inviting or friendly looking. I'll clean it up. Also, I have been thinking about having an open studio every Friday. Winter is isolating. I did this painting with inspiration from another artist. (Editor's note: sorry, apparently I didn't get the correct spelling of the artist and couldn't locate it).

Greg: I am gessoing supports and putting together paint kits. I am working on a travel box. I also designed a tshirt for Alla Prima. When you put your phone up to the code on the shirt, it will take you to the Alla Prima blog. (See image below).

Serena: I am not opposed to plein air..but I have not done it. I have drawn flowers outdoors, but that has been the extent of it. My goal is to try it. I draw at my kitchen counter! I travel and my possibilities are "open"! I brought in two Sargent portrait studies.

Kathy: I went to Fred Meyer and got some flowers to plant...I'm going to paint them. Also, my plan is to paint some of our apple trees! I have been studying Richard Schmid, Sargent and Kitts! I am showing two recent gouache paintings that were inspired by Schmid.

Nancy: I haven't been here in awhile! For Spring I want to go outside for drawing and painting! I've been taking classes with Za Vue. This is a painting I did in her class and I painted this painting plein air with the "Tree Emergency Response Team".

Elo: First off, I'd like to point out that Nancy Zhang is sitting next to me...so please note, she is not me and I am not her! Everyone thinks we are the same person!!! (Laughter)! I have been working on several projects. Springtime is so beautiful and I already gravitate toward "lovely" scenery --the trick is to represent splendor ....without it looking "cheesy"! I am showing two recent paintings.

Dianna: I have been painting a lot this winter and traveling a lot too. While I was gone (teaching) my husband took up painting!! He had commandeered my studio! (Laughter)! So, during Spring we are going to be making him his own space, thank you very much (Laughter) ! This morning I started putting together my plein air stuff. I am going to be teaching a class in the physics and anatomy of light. We take it for granted, but light is what we are all about! I am showing three recent paintings.

Sheila: Spring makes me want to go shopping! (Laughter)! I elected to go shopping online, however. I bought acrylic paints. I am showing a recent painting.

Sarah: There is a term that fits me: "Clutter Bitch" ! (Laughter)! I like it. I embrace my clutter. But! I do straighten things out about every two weeks. I am participating in a square format show too, and I haven't worked in square format before. I'll plan good designs. I'm getting a "survival" job and I am going to re-brand myself. I am showing my completed painting (inspired by a Russian artist).

Vicki: Spring time is "decision time"! I look at old paintings and decide if they can be improved and/or salvaged. I might "finish" some paintings. I find it helpful to see my paintings on the blog..then sometimes I can firmly decide if it is finished or not! I am showing a "Springtime" painting of trees and this Coast painting.

Becky: When I was in business I participated in this corporate thing called "Up and Out Forecast". It had to do with evaluating what was working and what was not! I know the same premise could work for artists. Spring is a great time to make decisions about what stays and what goes..both physical things or outdated ineffective "policies".  A long time ago I heard something that stuck with me. "Make two piles. One pile is to throw away. The other is for all the things that you want to take with you when you die" (Laughter)!

Bonny: I don't really look at it as a seasonal thing. It so happens, however, that I have recently reviewed my business plan. I took paintings from last year and turned them into printed cards. I have a new solo show at New Seasons. I followed through on aspects of my business plan and as a result I now have cards in a store in the Pearl (Oblation). I'm also working to put together a First Thursday type thing in my area!  I've contacted the Chamber of Commerce St. Helens will have a First Thursday in the summer months, 6-8pm!

Linda: I had a person coming over to visit me on Tuesday....so it forced me to clean up! (Laughter)! My Garden Club is having a benefit, so I am donating some of my paintings. I am showing a painting of the Columbia City wetlands.

Pam: I've been reading a book "Into Thin Air". It is so grim and so cold, I decided to put it down and enjoy Spring instead! (Laughter)! I paint walls in my house during Spring! It is just something I really like to do. I like to clean up before every new project. This is a recent painting.

Jim: I have gotten rid of a whole bunch of studies. I prepped 36 new boards! I have been doing studies in my still life station in my studio. I have been focusing on shapes, not objects, values, not color!

Chris: There was a recent post on Facebook about potential paint outs and it inspired me to put together my gear. I'm locked and loaded for plein air! (Applause)!  My husband and I took a trip with an objective to take photos that I could paint from. This was nine years ago! He was so nice, he would pull over the car anytime I saw something I wanted to photograph. He had such patience! I finally did this painting of a scene that beguiled me. I liked the wind turbines in the distance. This area had really nice dumps too. I may be the only person in the world who loves dumps! I just love looking at things in a dump! (Laughter)! I call this painting: On the Way to Waste Management" (Laughter)!

Annie: My Aunt died, and today I should be at her Memorial Service. Instead, I am here. My Aunt was the one who introduced me to art...to drawing and painting. She was a high school art teacher ("Mrs. O'Connell") and all of her life she was involved in all manner of art-making. In particular, she aspired to be a children's book illustrator. I am showing you a book that she did. She was told by a publisher that her books were "a little too grim and sad for children"....and that's true, they were! (Laughter)!  In fact, her work was very beautiful and thoughtful and she inspired countless people during her long life. Here is a photo of me and my Aunt (from the 60s) that I have secured inside of my sketchbook. (Looking skyward): "So long Marjie, and thank you for everything that you gave me" (APPLAUSE)!

Yong: I have been painting many Spring floral paintings! I usually paint in watercolor, but for a change of pace I painted this with gouache. I like to experiment and if I use one medium for a long time...I like to switch to something else, for variety! (Yong also showed a small sketch of Tim Young, but it is going to be published in the future, so it couldn't be photographed).

Thomas: There is controversy about whether or not painters and photographers can include this particular tree in photographs or paintings. So, this is a work in progress and it can't be photographed for the blog. On the subject of spouses that "take up painting", my wife has also returned to painting and we have to figure out how to share the space. It's challenging, there is not enough room to have separate studios. As for Spring cleaning...I only clean if I have to look for something! (Laughter)!
