Meeting Notes July 11, 2019

Today's topic: If you could ask one question of any artist (living or dead) who would you ask...and what would you ask them?

Celeste: I would ask Vermeer if he used optics for the perspective in his paintings! I have a book on the entire subject that I have never read. I suppose if I read it, I might be closer to the truth (Laughter)! If I were permitted a 2nd question I'd ask him why he apparently painted only 34 paintings. I am showing my cigar box pochade box. I was inspired to use it again after seeing a video of Tom Coates of England painting while holding his box on his lap. I also painted these two from life studies at Pittock Mansion yesterday. 

Loretta: I remember David Dunlop saying if acrylics existed then...the Impressionists would have favored them (over oil paint). I'd ask the Impressionists if that is true!

Wendy: I would ask Emily Carr where she camped! I have shared with you that my partner of 40 years passed away unexpectedly. Among her possessions I found Dr. PH Martin watercolors. I decided to use them....this is my first watercolor! (Applause)!

Geri: If there are no straight lines in the human form...then how does Egon Schiele make straight lines in the human form so beautiful!? How does he do it! Also, if I may be permitted a 2nd question...I'd ask Alice Neel ..how did she get so much of the person into her paintings?! I am showing you a drawing that I did...I call it "Long Drink of Water" (Laughter)!

Ken: When I considered the question I thought about Dali. I'm not certain who I would put my question to...but it would be: Is there any percentage of artists whose work comes from "somewhere else"?  I am interested, of course, because that's how I work. I call it intuitive painting. Here is a painting that I painted "intuitively".  The subject matter comes to me. 

Tim: Shishkin..I would ask him if he is still taking students? (Laughter) Actually, I would ask him how much time did he spend standing in the forest...looking at the forest!? I know that he used a camera in his studio work, but the paintings are beyond great. It seems obvious that he observed in a special way. Here is the results of the "Burnt Plate Oil" experiment (when Thomas and I made our own medium). Also, Chris, Ward and I did an impromptu paint out at Whitaker Ponds.  It was a challenge because of so much green. I added some color ! 

Raphael: Mostly I would ask my favorite artists...how the h3ll did you do that! I've been painting for the lavender festival and if I were to be completely honest I am a little tired of rows of lavender! (Laughter)! I painted this and I was really pleased with the outcome (perhaps because no rows were involved) and I got a lot of good response on facebook for this painting from Wayward farms.

Annie: I took a workshop with an artist I greatly admired. I brought this book that he illustrated. I would ask him how does he choose the colors that he chooses! I am currently working on color relationships in my class. I have never been a fan of that statement: "Value does all the work, and color gets all the credit"...but after much consideration I have to agree and I am starting to see it for myself. I painted this yesterday at Pittock Mansion (model in landscape). My values had been too light. Za came by and said: Try some darks! I used Burnt Sienna and Ultra Blue for her hair. 

Joanne T: I would ask Eric Bowman...how does he manage these brushstrokes! They are very unusual. He shifts the colors all around within the color and I'd like to know how he does that! (I'm showing you a painting of his that I own)..how does he get this color? I'd also ask Lindsey Kustusch how she decides to lose what edge where! I painted this at Eagle Creek.

Lisa: Manet....I'd ask him Why did you ditch your training to paint (instead) how you did! My recent paintings are going into the Lavender show...so I am showing a painting from my archives.

Judith: I would ask Michaelangelo if the Medicis were mean to him (Laughter)! I am showing my completed work from my class. The assignment was about complementary colors  (--it has purple in the shadows). 

Chris: If I could, I would buy one of van Gogh's paintings and give him a big hug. (Laughter)! I went with Ward and Tim to Whitaker Ponds. I started the painting there and finished it at home. It was very green there...and I "added" color too. I am also showing you Ward's painting that he did there....because he gave it to me!

Tom: I would ask Monet if he ever did a bad painting! I snuck into the Lavender field to paint this. (I'm not participating in the formal event). This is a painting that I did at Mountainside. 

Mark: I would ask George Inness just when he stopped painting what was there....and started painting from another realm! Just how did he do that ..when did that shift happen and why? I am showing a painting I did from Elk Cove on Mt. Hood.

Sandi: My question is ...do you mind me (a "non-visual artist") being here? I hope not! I love being here and listening to all of you, it is really interesting to me. I have learned a lot!  (Editor's note: of course not Sandi--never! you are always welcome here and thank you again for the baked goods today)!

Jim: I would ask Edvard Munch if he minds being known for and "defined" by only "The Scream"? I discovered that he was an incredible artist who painted scores of beautiful paintings (hundreds)! I encourage you to look at his "non-scream" work! I have been painting for the lavender festival. I am officially tired of purple! (Laughter)! I will be taking it off of my palette for awhile! (Laughter)! I was pleased with this painting that I did recently (even though it *is* predominately purple).

Tedd: Joanne Thorpe...I copy pages off the internet and I have the answer to your Eric Bowman color question. The color he gets he calls "Pepto Bismal" I will send the information to Celeste so she can share it. I'd like to ask Remington..how did he get those horses to stand still, especially with the Indians chasing him? (Laughter)! And further, how did he get those wet paintings home? I am showing a recent "Lavender" painting!

Jeanie: I'll be glad to read the Vermeer book! I just completed this painting from a previous study (a smaller study). 

Donna: I would ask an artist's model...how did they come to be a model? Why? Did they fall in love? Was it something they always wanted to do? What is the story behind becoming an artist's model? I also might like to ask Morrisette and Cassatt what was it like to be a woman artist in the male dominated art world? I have a show coming up and I am sharing two paintings with you.

Greg: I'd ask van Gogh...how did he get his paint *so* thick? It is remarkably thick !

Thomas: I'd ask Grandma Moses why she stopped raising chickens in order to paint! (Laughter)! I'd ask Velazquez what was it like to paint a painting that could have cost you your life! Last week I was at the coast...I painted this little rock off of Hug Point.
