Meeting Notes, March 12, 2020

Today's topic: Your current inspiration...what is inspiring you most recently (it can be anything, certain music, a particular artist, a new technique..etc, what is it)

Celeste: I have been recently interested in bringing more "narrative" into my paintings and I've been reading about Harvey Dunn. He was a student of Howard Pyle. In the book I'm reading there are notes from a lecture he gave about how an idea "chooses you". (I confess to not understanding much of this, but I enjoy the concept that an idea selects you in order to become real)! I am showing a recent painting. (You can see quite a lot of Za Vue influence).

Joanne K: I have finished this commissioned painting called "Martin's Bar". I am happy with it (finally). I'm delivering it today. Here is a recent from-life figure painting...I find getting proportion right to be inspiring (and, of course I can see that the head seems out of scale, but by and large, I'm still pretty happy with this). I'm excited about an upcoming workshop with Terry Miura at OSA. I like how he pulls the background in and out of the figure.

Susan: I live in a wooded area and love looking out the windows at the changes. It is markedly Spring and though woods can seem overwhelming I'm ready to go into them to paint. My current inspiration---I am getting ready to paint the woods!

Ken: I have a new Art Studio! (Applause)! I am in the same building with Brenda. I have 300 square feet. It's just right. It inspires me just to walk into it. I am inspired by everything. I see things all the time that lift me up, things that make me think "in what way can I share that"?

Wendy: I am inspired by all of you and coming here! I am poised to paint my 8x8's for the upcoming Alla Prima show...but I am currently "frozen"! (Laughter)

Joanne T: I look at a lot of art on Instagram and Facebook. I am always inspired looking at art. My current favorite is Kyle Ma. It is remarkable that he is only 19 years old and already a Master. I also am still in my online class with Matt Smith. I am showing a painting I did of the lighthouse in Bandon and also a painting I have done for the upcoming Sequoia Gallery show.

Annie: I just recently saw an exhibit in Bandon, sculpture made from garbage that washes ashore. I like what Elo said last week about the challenges involved in painting especially beautiful scenery. One of my inspirations is Bart Forbes. Inspiration is sometimes serendipitous ..when I went to print out a copy of one of my paintings it was cropped into this square and I think I liked this version better than how I painted it (Laughter)! I have been working on painting studies with 3 distinct values. When I did this color version I didn't think it had 3 distinct values represented, but then I added white ...and then suddenly it did!

Sharman: Where I grew up (in South Dakota) I was always inspired by the light! Lately I have been taking photos of apple blossoms in the wine country. I find that to be inspiring. I signed up for the Lavender Festival. I am learning how to lay out my palette is an organized and systematic way.

Steven: I, too, am inspired by light plus "bodies and faces and all their good graces". I am very taken with other people's handwriting. I have discovered construction symbols..they are painted everywhere on roads and sidewalks. To me they look to represent all sorts of things (aside from their actual purpose). I am showing a photo of one, an example. My most recent idea sprung from being on mass transit with my baby. She was asleep in my arms, despite all the clamor all around. I had an idea to try to express this peace visually (somehow).

Dotty: After all the gray months I am ready for color. Color is really inspiring to me! I have been using gouache and gouache can be extremely colorful. I am showing a recent pastel. Some of us painted at Council Crest last week and this is my result. Mt Hood was impossible to resist.

Serena: I am bringing back Winston (the traveling box). I will sign the inside as everyone else has. I am showing the book "The Art Spirit". I'll bet many of you are familiar with this book. One line in it that really stopped me was" We are not here to do what is already done". I am showing a recent painting from the Mark Andreas class.

Jim: This group inspires me! All of you always give me great ideas. I love Edgar Payne's work. I like some of the Southern California artists too. Daniel Pinkham is a favorite. Some of these artists ...they are so expressive. You look at their painting and it is as if you can see inside their heart. I have never painted on wood panels or 8x8 panels, but I did this recent painting and I discovered that I liked the surface.

Tim: You guys are my inspiration! You know, there are people in our group who have passed on and I think of them, and how they wanted to be here, but couldn't (because of cancer). I remember them sometimes and feel inspired by how much they loved painting. On a lighter note, I find William Leroy Metcalf to be an inspiration. I bought a tent to paint from. It seemed like a good idea...but I quickly determined that it is best to move out of the tent and just paint in the rain. (Laughter)! Don't believe everything you read on Amazon. (Laughter)!

Thomas: I do like to look at other painters. In particular, I have two facebook pages to recommend.
High Resolution Paintings and Close Ups and Female Artists in History. My wife has taken up painting and she wanted to paint daffodils. I thought I would join in and I'm painting this (in progress). I found this previous daffodil painting that I painted 20 years ago and I'm struck by how similar these paintings are, (despite all the years in-between).

Sheila: I've always been drawn to impressionism. Impressionism is my inspiration. I switched to landscape 6 months ago. I wanted to drive to the beach but I didn't realize how long it was going to take! I wound up painting between Lincoln City and Newport.

Becky: I like Instagram. It allows me to see a lot of art, it is streamlined. I'm following Dennis Perrin and Colley Whisson (two of my favorites). I wanted to paint something a little "dreary". That was my objective! I found this reference on pixabay. If I were to title it, I'd call it "Winter". I am looking forward to being able to paint more during daylight hours again.

Jeanie: I have watched all of the Michael James Smith videos. I am also a fan of Andrew Tischler. I am showing a new painting. You have to be a certain age to get this, but I'd like to title it "Are my Seams Straight"?

Greg: I like Instagram too. I am also a big fan of color. I grew up in the Midwest. I didn't fully realize it at the time, but I was depressed by the lack of anything interesting there. Then I traveled to San Francisco and I was changed forever. The Ocean! The light! I ultimately moved to Alaska. I would look out my office window (in Alaska) and I was awestruck by the scenery. I was looking at colors that seemed impossible, but there they were. (I had worked for Hallmark earlier and they wanted me to paint scenes like that. I would think to myself, my God, this looks so fake...but in Alaska, I found out, scenery "like that" actually exists)!  (Laughter)!

Eunice: I did a large painting for a relative. It was the Heceta Head Lighthouse at sunset, 40 x 60 and even larger in a frame. The painting did not fit in a car, he had to send a truck for it!  There was controversy later; he told me "Eunice, sunsets are not that color". I told him, well, you need to really watch a sunset...really watch it all. He must have taken my advice.  Later he agreed..."You know, you were right on".
