Celeste: I tend to want to get "other" things done before I paint, so sometimes that makes it so I am painting at 5pm (which is not ideal if it is wintery and gray). My favorite time to paint is the early morning. I brought 2 morning paintings. I also brought a couple daily paintings (for the Strada Daily painting challenge).
Joanne K: I think I like sunrise best...and two of my sunrise paintings have sold recently. I like painting with friends...whenever they are painting is fine with me...but mid day is not my favorite. I'll sometimes work on paintings (to improve them) in the studio during mid day. I am showing a floral from yesterday and my painting from the Carol Hansen paint out. I painted this one last year. I cut the bottom of this painting off, to make it a better painting!
Loretta: My favorite time is 5am to 10am! I am a morning person!
Ken: I like painting in the morning...but I do have to be in the mood to paint!
Raphael: I like to paint just before or just after a mid day nap! (Laughter)! The timing doesn't always work out though. I have been participating in the Strada Daily painting challenge. My favorite thing to paint is reflections!
Sarah: I brought 3 books that I wanted to share with you. This is about gesture, so important in animation. I also brought the James Gurney book and a new book about the Preraphaelites (my newest painting obsession).
Stephanie: When it come to summer...morning for comfort and late afternoon for drama. The strong light is great for painting...the in-between times can look bland in comparison. Vicki and I went to the coast for painting recently. Here are two plein air paintings and also my figure painting from Carol Hansen's paint out.
Loretta L: When I am painting with a group it doesn't matter to me at all what time of day it is. I haven't done much evening painting. My studio is in the basement, and it is fine...except it can be dark in the morning and the darkness in the basement is not inviting! I am participating in the Strada Challenge and I've been working in watercolor.
Renita: I put "other" things first before I paint...which isn't what I really want to do! I recently moved and my yard is right on a golf course. Those diehard golfers golf in the rain...! (So, *I* shouldn't have any excuses)! (Laughter)!
Karen: I'd like to thank whoever arranged for us to go to Oakwood Gardens. I took photos there and I completed this painting from my photo reference.
Kathy: I like morning and evening best...and I'd like to paint in my studio, but my lighting is so dismal, I never like painting inside. I am showing my painting from the Carol Hansen paint out and a recent gouache painting.
Kay: I like to paint when I have a paint brush in my hand! (Laughter)!
Judith: I paint in the morning and I like to paint for two hours in the evening. I am showing a painting I did after Stubbs, the famous equine artist. I am studying animal texture and anatomy. I was very excited the other day to see a fantastic sale here in Multnomah Village of 5 dollar frames. I happily bought some and realized later that I put my wallet on the roof of my car and then drove away! Well, I went crazy retracing my steps and asking everyone if they had it...and everyone said "omg on your roof! it could be anywhere"! Right! So I did all the things I had to do (cancel cards, new drivers license) and in my mailbox was a priority mail box, inside ...my wallet safe and sound with everything still in it! (and no return address). I'm just telling you all, because there are decent people "out there"!
Joanne T: The time I like best is 10 to 3. It has become a pattern for me. I like to paint at home best! I too had some troubles lately. The contact person in a gallery that I am in is no longer there (however, I didn't know that) and the new person was not giving me any confidence in handling things...so I am opting out! On a positive note, however, I was telling another gallery about this and she said: "Oh, we'll take your chickens"! (Laughter)! So, one gallery gone, but another right there (and a better one). I painted this watercolor recently and I thought about Yong and his directive to make sure you have the feeling before you paint...and to hang onto it! I did use opaque white (because I don't consider myself a "real" watercolorist). (Laughter)!
Paula: I like morning light and evening light. One of my favorite things to do is start something on one day and go back the next day to finish it. (Of course, you have to have the same type of day). This painting is from Villa Catalana and these paintings are studies I've done in Za's class.
Carol: I like later afternoon but, it is such a short amount of time to paint in! In the studio I have always liked afternoon to evening. I've been reading a book by Deepak Choprah and he writes that those hours (2-6) are condusive to deep thinking...maybe that is why I like it best!
Tom: I've worked at every time. I do like to get obligations out of the way before painting...but also, that is not a hard and fast rule. As a matter of fact, I've painted expressly to make myself feel better about something (ignoring other things that need to be done). I did this recent still life and I probably did it in that 2-6 time slot.
Becky: I am currently painting my daughter in law (to be)...it is about 3/4's of the way done. My favorite time is 9pm on! That way no one bothers me. I have big projects (that are not really painting related) that weigh on me. I look forward to getting through it!
Vicki: I am a morning person. If I don't exercise in the morning I tend to skip it altogether..but! If I pick up a brush, I will see it through (no matter the time). Here is my recent coast painting and also a painting I did at Sauvie Island (at the end of the day with the end of my paint)!
Wendy: I paint outside on my deck...but with winter coming I am wondering what I'll do instead. I just don't like to be inside. I have determined that I don't like oil or pastel ...so I am continuing to do watercolors. Here are two recent still life.
Tim: I like morning and evening. I really like long shadows. Despite liking morning and evening, I often find myself out there 10 to 2! (Laughter)! I painted this during a rain storm..a real gusher! (Laughter)! I like the way it turned out. I like painting the "weather". This red cabin is from the Carol Hansen Paint out. I am showing the "wheel desk" (that I used to paint this in my car)!
Geri: Anytime is fine for me...as long as there is enough light. I find that when it gets dark and the lighting isn't very good I just am better off not painting. I am working on a painting, but it is not done yet, so I am showing two paintings from my archives. (This one is my first plein air painting).
Lynn: (visiting from California--welcome)! I am a sketchbook artist. I like to fill my sketchbooks with visits to Starbucks and all my travels. There is always plenty of light in Starbucks! (Laughter)!
Eunice: I have windows that face east and it was a problem when the sun would stream in..so I went to Joanne Fabrics and got some denim to hang over the windows. Problem solved!
Greg: I used to like night the best (in my studio) because there were no interruptions. I think I was also accustomed to burning the midnight oil, because that is what illustrators do. Recently I have decided to go to earlier...I'm trying to find a new zone for creativity. My rhythm is off from others--I used to stay up so late and it's a habit to break. Working early is a new thing.
Yong: I'm back (applause)! I was thinking this morning..it's so nice to have a place to go to listen to artists. I travel a lot and it is nice to be here with all of you --it is a good opportunity for me to hear what you all think about. What time do I like best? If I had my way I would paint before sunrise and then a couple hours afterwards and also the hour before and after sunset. Of course, you have to paint so fast to capture the light! I have to feel confident to get my washes down and I might not get it all done in one sitting. Sometimes I will do the fine tuning at home. I'll get something done on site, but complete it on my own (later). I'm not a picky painter..I did this as part of my vineyard series. I started it there...and finished it in the studio.

Sept 21: Paint Out with host Jerry Mishler in Corbett 2pm-6pm (note beginning time is 2pm for the afternoon light)
Address - 37201 NE Benfield Rd. Corbett, OR 97010
Directions - From Portland: Take I-84 East past Troutdale to EXIT 22. At the top of the Exit ramp turn RIGHT onto Corbett Hill Road. In about 1.5 miles, at the top of the hill turn LEFT onto the Historic Columbia River Highway. Travel East for approximately 1/4 mile passing the Corbett Market on your left. When you reach the Corbett Fire Station and the RV Park (on your right), angle LEFT onto Benfield Road. Our house is about 100 yards further on the left side. It is single story, with brown cedar siding, a circular driveway, and a large, red barn on the right side of the driveway. Look for orange traffic cones at the end of the driveway.
Painting - Our house is at the top of a circular driveway. If the weather is nice I would guess many would want to paint the view out behind the house looking out toward the Cascade foothills across the river. We’re too far back from the edge of the gorge to see the river below us. Our property consists of 16 acres of field and about 5 acres of woods. There is also a large old barn next to the house and plenty of garden space - lots of choices to paint.
Parking - Use the circular driveway to drop gear off at the house and then park along the road below the house. Look for more red traffic cones to indicate parking areas.
Conveniences - There is a restroom and water available in a small kitchen alongside my studio - all attached to the house.
Please feel free to call if you have any questions.
Contact - Jerry Mishler & Sara Grigsby
