Online Gallery notes, July 9, 2020

Yong Hong Zhong:  a. It's that magical time of the day again. b.Plein air painting around the campground.

Celeste Bergin: a. Recent floral b. Well, obviously I can’t take credit for how “creative” this cup is…Picasso designed it. I love the shape of it. c. This was painted from life with the sludge from my turp can. (scroll to the bottom for photo) The idea was to try something kind of nuts. It dried very pale, but I really enjoyed doing something so different. (It was an exercise from Larry Moore)  d. A gouache painting I did recently in my back yard.

Bets Cole: For the 'creative' prompt

Hilarie Couture: This was painted on a foam core linen panel 24x18. I added gold leaf.. one day I was out scouting around and found this perfect frame that had been on a mirror with the mirror broken out and I thought ..wow ..i bet that would fit my painting and it did ! (scroll down to see photo with frame) The perfect CREATIVE touch for this painting ...i did do a bit of work to it but I thought it really made the piece.

Kathy D Allegri: a. ”Longeing Day" Watercolor, 5 July 2020 b. "Provence en Boite" Watercolor 9.25" x 15.5." As I get old-er, I'm painting a series, There Are Places I Remember (so that I will). This sweet Provençal cafe on Smith St., Brooklyn, closed in Jan. 2019. Lots of good memories in the 'hood.

Tom Daniels: a. View over Vancouver Lake. b. In a friends back yard.

Sharon Furze: My granddaughter's shoes - she has been a fan of The Wizard of Oz for years and a friend gave her these. Too cute not to paint! / “A New "Do" - A New Day" 11x14 - practicing portraits for a bit.

Geri Graley: “Under the Wire”. Acrylic & colored pencil on canvas, 12x16”.

Sandy Hanis: A bouquet from a dear friend. I love how the memory stays when you take the time to paint it. Havent used my pastels for so long. I enjoy the drawing aspect.

Cynthia Jeffrey: a. Finished this today. Oil of Taos Pueblo. b. 11x14 canvas. Oil. Sunflowers near Hood River. c & d for the prompt Creative e. Memaloos sunset.

Tara Kemp: Here's my painting from a plein air session yesterday at McKenzie River Lavender Farm, what a great setting to paint! "Lavender Dreams", 20 x 10", oil on canvas.

Joanne Kollman: Plein air at Grice farm, some florals and some self portraits. (Editor’s note: Joanne won “Best in Show” in the current Plein Air and Alla Prima show at OSA with first floral shown)

Bhavani Krishnan:  I was trying to capture the intense glow of the full moon. Started on location on July 4. Lots of excitement in the sky with the full moon and fireworks. I almost put in some fireworks in the painting but ultimately felt it detracted from the moon.

Loretta Lang: I've been working on these two off and on too long. a. A sneaky photo I took on a bus in Mexico City b. From a bus in the Mekong Delta, VietNam. .

Lisa Marshall: I finally finished my mountain painting. I put it on my personal FB page so some of you have seen it already. But I wanted to show the finished piece to the group.

Ken Mazzochi:  For the prompt “Creative”

Jerry Mishler: I finished this a couple of weeks ago - from a photo I took many years ago near Summer Laker in S Central Oregon.

Kathleen Mitchell: Haystack Rock Oil 24" X 36"

Peggie Moje: We've been in our new home for one month and have no flower garden. When our next door neighbors brought us a gift of this bouquet yesterday, I was overjoyed and just had to paint it! "Summer Dahlias" - 14"x11" - pencil/watercolor/ink/pastel

Louisa Moutos: Family Homestead in Greece Agia Sofia

Mike Porter: a. I finished the plein air piece I talked about in our Zoom meeting last Thursday. The one I sold right off the easel to the family who "posed" for me. Painted at the south end of Cannon Beach last weekend. Good mental therapy for a guy getting ready to restart chemo this coming week. b. Another desperate attempt...from Wednesday’s outing at the Grice farm.

Eunice Sause:  I got this idea from a photographer who dressed his young daughter in renaissance clothing and put her in renaissance settings. It was a really fun project and I really enjoyed it.

Raphael Schnepf:  a. USCG Depoe Bay 8" x 10" gouache on illustration board. b. Minus Tide Otter Rock 20" x20" oil on canvas.

George Schweser: This storefront is across the street from Peninsula Park. I did a quick sketch while waiting for the bus and finished it later. It was done at 1:00 in the afternoon with great lighting. As far as “creative” , we as artists are always looking for solutions to problems. Thinking outside the box. Pencil,7 x 10 .

Karen Shawcross: "Lilac Haze"  Soft pastel on sanded paper with alcohol underpainting.

Nancy Smith-Klos: a. Blue Vase oil on 8x8 canvas b. Pink Parrot oil on 8x8 canvas c. Flamingo oil on 8x8 canvas

Jim Syfert: a. This weeks topic “Creative”. Not 100% sure it fits the category but here it is. Posting two photos so you can see a distance view versus closeup (scroll to bottom of the page to see 2nd photo). This is from a photo that I took up on Cooper Mountain. It is a 9x12 oil, brush and palette knife. b. 8x10 oil. Painted July 2 after our Alla Prima Portland call.. from a photo I took when Mike Porter and I went out to Sauvie Island a couple of weeks ago. (The person walking back from the barn is Mike) c. Rough in of an experiment to paint a still life in the mode of Matisse. Never used a green rough in before, so we will see what comes out of this effort.

Joanne Thorpe:  a and b: New paintings c. One more for this week. This is a little 6 x 7 that I painted for this vintage frame. (scroll down to see photo with frame) I switched to water soluble paints for health reasons and I’m happy with it so far. Takes a long time to dry but I ordered some quick dry medium. Always good to try new things.

Loretta Unger: This painting is whatever the viewer wants it to be.

Bonny Wagoner:  I am taking a class called "Leverage Your Art". It's pushing my existing boundaries in a lot of ways... all good. We were all given the same design brief to work from to create a map of a large city close to us. I don't use Adobe Illustrator like I should so I had to reacquaint myself with how the software did certain things and forced myself to use layers so I could draw the map. I also figured out how to integrate a watercolor, pen and ink piece I painted last year sitting in OMSI's parking lot. I even created my own font. It wasn't intended to be something for real but you just never know where the journey will take you.

Elo Wobig:
I rejoined Za Vue’s class and dove into doing portraits. Here are a couple of my boys . a. First is my oldest in Zorn Palette with an emphasis on cool colors. b. The second is my youngest where I reached for that phthalo blue to go more blue. My middle son was painted first but needs “fixing” as I’ve learned from her insightful feedback, so not posting that. 8x10 oil

Tim Young: 11x14 oil on panel The Protector

Vicki Zimmerman:  A cloudy day on Sauvie Island is still a beautiful day. "Sauvie Island Slough"

The TOPIC is Color Mixing (Tell us something about your color mixing “philosophy”)
This is a meeting that you have to plan and prepare for.
We’re asking you to email the image in advance.
Send one good brushwork example* to allaprimaportland@gmail.com with “ZOOM JULY 9” in the subject line.
*We don’t mean a close up, send the entire painting image, we’ll share the painting onscreen with the zoom share screen feature and discuss each participant’s painting. Be prepared to talk about features of your current brushwork.
Structured Zoom meetings* are now once a month (the first Thursday of every month at 10am).
The new format requires that you email one image of a painting of yours that best fits the Topic.
*We will still do “occasional social zooms” every now and then just for fun, but they’re going to be on random dates, so please
Always check facebook and the notes in each weeks blog for dates and times. If you get weekly emails from me you’ll get an invitation to each Zoom meeting.
If you don’t think you are on the list and want to be, email allaprimaportland@gmail.com

Dear Alla Prima Portland,

Hello! My name is Natasha Luepke. I am the Arts Program Assistant at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg. In July, we host the Willamette Valley Lavender Festival and Paint Out. This year, the festival has been moved online.

In addition to moving the festival online, we are opening up registration for the paint out to anyone, with the theme "The Landscapes Around You." The only requirements are that artists pay the registration fee and create their painting en plein air, whether the subject be their backyard, a park, or some place else.

The submission deadline is July 11, 2020 and the exhibition will be online until August 31, 2020.

Please read the Call to Artists here: https://www.wvlavenderfestival.org/plein-air-pandemic-paint-out

We also have a Facebook group for painters: https://www.facebook.com/groups/pppout/

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Sincerely, Natasha
