This indoor workshop is for anyone interested in learning about the time-honored technique of alla prima painting. (Alla prima means to start and finish a painting in one session.) Some experience with oil will be helpful but is not required. If you have a question about your skill level or whether or not this class is appropriate, contact the instructor to discuss.

Your three days of instruction will focus on how to handle wet-into-wet paint, how to mix the color you need, and how to create a dynamic composition by dividing your painting's values into two masses of light and dark. You will also learn how to become more expressive by editing out extraneous detail and using more paint. What you will learn from Thomas' workshop can be applied to any subject matter or genre – be it figurative, still life, studio or outdoor landscape painting. Your instruction will be tailored to fit your present ability but with the intent of taking you further.

Thomas will offer two demonstrations and help you complete four paintings during the class.

Just a note to tell you thanks for a fabulously informative Alla Prima workshop.  You are a  fountain of knowledge and it's apparent how much you really love to teach. (As if I didn't already know that.) I came away with a confidence that I can mix oils to accomplish much on the canvas, now all I need is 48 hours in a day to paint!   Oh, and you should call your workshop Alla Primavera because you get a LOT more than you pay for.  So, go ahead and raise your prices, you deserve it!

Concepts, Principles & Techniques

All of courses are taught through Concepts (broad, abstract, overarching ideas that give structure, unity and purpose), Principles(the physics, biology and psychology of visual perception and responses) and Techniques (materials and methods). These are applied to all of the subjects offered as weekly classes and workshops.

By developing an understanding of the language and ideas of great art, rather than only mimicking the instructor or nature, each artist is able to cultivate their own artist voice in accordance with their unique sensibilities.

Enthusiastic instructor, Brenda Boylan is offering another opportunity to learn the secrets of this intensely expressive and colorful medium in an artistic environment. This 3 day workshop will be held in the beautiful Sowa Studios in the North Portland area. Pastel Punch is designed for all artistic levels who want to learn what it takes to make knock-out pastel paintings. Drawing skills are strongly recommended and photo references as well as still life sets will be used for some of your work. Students can expect to work a variety of exercises stressing the unique qualities of pastel while concentrating on composition, value, and color theory as well as pastel safety, framing and much more. Students will stretch their creativity with the given exercises and are not expected to complete a finished work in class. If the weather allows, we may elect to paint outdoors for the final day.

Painting Expressive Still-Lifes Workshop

Saturday, May 19th (10-3)

Cost $60 per session

This class is open to beginners on up. We will cover composition, color, edges and the use of expressive brush strokes to give life and energy to your painting. The atmosphere will be informal and friendly so come and enjoy a Saturday or two of still life painting.

You will need: an easel, canvas, paintbrushes, odor-less minerals spirits and drop cloth. Also, bring a lunch and something to drink. There are a couple of restaurants and a coffee shop located in the courtyard near the gallery so you can also get something there to eat and drink.
